Initially the book appeared as a serial as each chapter was published separately. The author uses the characters and situations in the book to give social observations that attacks the double standards and imperfections of the institutions in the society. The government, how it handled the poor, laws governing the country and criminal system of the country are some of the issues addressed in the book. Contrary to the expectations of many, he doesn’t suggest solutions to some of the problems addressed in the book. This book is about an orphan who endures a miserable existence in a work house and later goes through a series of sufferings. He however gets a good ending as he meets members of his extended family and lives a happier life thereafter. The book brings about the moral decadence of the society and how innocent c hildren suffer in the hands of the people who should be taking care of them. About the author Charles Dickens was born on February 1812 and died on 9th June 1870. He was the most popular novelist during the Victorian era. His works still remain popular to date. He is responsible for some of the English literature’s most iconic characters. Many of his novels have their themes revolve around social reforms. His work first appeared as a series in magazines. Charles Dickens often created the episodes as they were being serialized in the magazines. This helped him to produce a rhythmic trend throughout his work. (Donovan, 1968) The end of each episode was a cliffhanger which left the readers with an urge to read even more. The readers always stayed anxious waiting for the release of the next episode. Charles Dickens work has been praised across the globe for mastery of prose and realism. Oliver Twist was his second novel and was published by Richard Bentley in 1838. Summary of the book The book begins with Oliver’s birth which was in a work-house. Oliver’s mother was found lying in the streets and then brought to a work house in England. She gives birth the next night to Oliver Twist. The delivery was done by a surgeon and a drunken nurse. Unfortunately she dies soon after delivery. Oliver having been orphaned at a tender age is then transferred to a baby care home where he stays until he is nine years old. At the baby care home, he endures a lot of suffering as they are left to starve by the woman managing the home, Mrs. Mann who pockets all the money given to her for their food. When Oliver is nine, the parish beadle, Mr. Bumble who gave him the name â€Å"Oliver Twist† arrives to inform her that Oliver is supposed to return to the workhouse.   Oliver meets other boys at the work house who are harshly treated. They boys urge Oliver to ask for more food which prompts his removal from the workhouse. He is first locked up and five pounds offer ed to anyone who is willing to take Oliver as an apprentice so as to relieve the parish of his care. Sowerberry, an undertaker is apprenticed and takes Oliver Twist. A fight erupts between Oliver and Sowerberry’s other apprentice, Noah Claypole. The fight raged after Noah had insulted Oliver’s late mother by calling her a bad name. Oliver beat the much older boy, Noah but Mrs. Sowerberry joins in and takes Noah’s side. Oliver is beaten again by Mr. Bumble and Sowerberry’s husband. Inside his room, he breaks down and weeps and later decides to run away. He wanders aimlessly in the streets for some time and later arrives in London. In London, he meets Jack Dawkins also known as the Artful Dodger. Artful Dodger takes him to Fagin who is a receiver of stolen goods and the manager of a clique of thieves who are sent to pickpocket and commit petty crimes in the streets. Oliver is trained as a pickpocket but this is short-lived and disastrous as he is seized when the real thieves botch a theft but escape and Oliver is left to face the music. The theft victim Mr. Brownlow believes that Oliver is innocent and therefore asks for his release when he is taken to court. Mr. Brownlow decides Oliver home but when Fagin learns that Oliver had been released and taken by the theft victim, he sends out two of his accomplices, Bill Sikes and Nancy, to kidnap Oliver as he fears that he could lead the Bow Street Runners to his den. Oliver’s small size and intelligence makes Sikes to see him as an asset in his job. He therefore takes Oliver to assist him in committing his criminal activities. However, Oliver is a complete gremlin when it comes to criminal operations. He is shot on the shoulder but the occupants of the house, Rose Maylie and her aunt sympathizes with him as they see him as an innocent victim of a criminal gang. They take Oliver and cares for him. Monks who is Oliver’s half brother want Oliver out of the way so that he can inherit a fortune. Nancy, the prostitute who kidnapped Oliver together with Sikes is now concerned for Oliver’s welfare and tells Mr, Brownlow and Rose about Oliver. Noah Claypole who was Sowerberry’s other apprentice reappears in the novel but now as an informer. Fagin then passes the information to Sikes. He twists the story so as to make it sound as if Nancy had informed on him while in real sense Nancy had shielded Sikes. Sikes then decide to brutally murder Nancy and flee to the countryside to escape from facing the law. At the countryside, he is haunted by visions of Nancy’s ghost. He then goes back to London to find a hiding place where he later falls to his death while being chased and Fagin is arrested and condemned to be hanged. On a happier note, Rose turns out to be the long lost sister of Oliver’s mother. A chain of coincidences unravel to reveal that Oliver is actually Rose’s nephew and that his mother was once loved. Oliver then lives happily with Mr. Brownlow who was his savior. Noah then becomes a paid informer to the police. Later on Bumbles lose their jobs that prompt him to utter the words â€Å"the law is a ass.† They are then reduced to great poverty and ends up in the workhouse they once lorded. The patients regress to a time when the family was together, and this psychological state is accompanied by bingeing. I have several problems with this study. The first and foremost is that I have trouble understanding how the author was able to conclude from the evidence that bulimic patients binge because they are going through a regression. The evidence that led to that theory is not shown, and the theory itself is not explained very well. I can see how a bulimic might want their family to be together as it was when they were younger, but I dont see how that leads to bulimia. Definition of Indefinite Article An indefinite article, called an  artà ­culo  indefinido  in Spanish, makes a noun refer to a nonspecific item or items of its class. In English, there are only two indefinite articles, a and an. In Spanish, there are four indefinite articles,  un, una, unos, and unas. Spanish and English have different grammatical rules concerning when indefinite articles  are needed or should be omitted. Agreement in Number or Gender Matters In Spanish, number and gender make a difference. Is the word plural or singular? Is the word masculine or feminine? The Spanish indefinite article must agree with the gender and number of the noun that follows it. Singular Forms of the Indefinite Article There are two singular indefinite articles, un and una, translating to a or an.  Un is used when referring to a masculine word, for example, un  gato,  meaning, a cat. Una is used before a feminine word, as in una persona, meaning, a person. Plural Forms of the Indefinite Article There are two plural forms of indefinite articles in Spanish, unos  and unas, translating to a few or some. Unos is masculine. Unas is feminine. In this case, the correct form to use depends on the gender of the word being described,  for example, She is reading  some  books, can be translated to be  Ella lee  unos  libros.  Although a female is reading the books, the word being described is libros, which is a masculine word, therefore, the article uses the masculine form of the word. Although the word some is considered an indefinite article in Spanish, the word some is not classified as an indefinite article in English. When a feminine singular noun begins with a stressed  ,  a, or  ha, the masculine indefinite article is used instead of the feminine indefinite article to aide in pronunciation. For example, the word,  guila, meaning, eagle, is a feminine word. When referring to an eagle, instead of saying una  guila, which sounds clunky in pronunciation, the grammar rule allows a speaker to say un  guila, which has a smoother flow. Personification: â€Å"’Consider then, Socrates,’ the Laws would probably continue, ‘whether it is also true for us to say that what you are trying to do to us is not right†¦Ã¢â‚¬â„¢Ã¢â‚¬  (913). Plato’s â€Å"Crito† is one of the many tremendously influential pieces of literature produced in ancient Greece. It is a thought-provoking, philosophical discussion regarding the role of the individual within society, and how to treat injustice. As part of a series of imaginary dialogues between Socrates and other characters, â€Å"Crito† deals with the conflict Socrates is presented with, as he awaits execution. Crito, one of Socrates’ close friends, urges Socrates to escape prison while he still can. Crito offers several arguments to justify his escape, including the shame he would endure from the public for letting his friend die, and the poor example it would set for the children of Athens. However, Socrates carefully analyzes each of Crito’s arguments for escaping, and proves them invalid through logic and deductive reasoning. Socrates suggests it is better to die a victim who has lived justly and killed unjustly, than to return the injustice and hurt the Laws. He states, â€Å"†¦it is never right to do a wrong or return a wrong or defend one’s sel f against injury by retaliation† (911), which exemplifies the belief that injustice cannot be treated with injustice. Socrates mentions an agreement being broken in this passage; this alludes to the belief that there is a social contract between the individual and government. Socrates reasons that when a citizen lives in Athens, he is indirectly supporting the laws and abiding them. The individual has a moral obligation to the government. While it is beneficial to challenge the government under some circumstances, one threatens the foundation of a stable society by breaking its laws. Socrates, who has lived 70 years of Athenian life, is content by living in accordance with this contract. He feels a state simply cannot exist if laws have no power. He firmly believes in the importance of strict laws, as he calls them the most precious achievement of human history. I found that watching the play on stage massively enhanced the script and furthered my understanding of the play. The use of scenery, sound, lighting, special effects, the actors and their actual movement about the stage all emphasised Priestley’s moral message of the play, which he felt was so necessary to express. The play ‘An Inspector Calls’ was written by J.B.Priestley in the winter of 1944-1945, when Priestley, as explained in his biography by Vincent Brome, had â€Å"an idea about a mysterious inspector visiting a family... before the (second world) war.† The entire play was written â€Å"at top speed,...† and finished within a week. Even though the play was written in 1945, it was set in 1912 and written on a basis of Priestley’s early influences in life. His childhood home was a place where socialist ideas thrived and he had a real experience of working class life through numerous visits to his grandparent’s house in narrow backstreets behind a mill factory. J.B.Priestley was very interested in politics, but could not agree completely with the policies of any one political party. One of the main reasons for him writing ‘An Inspector Calls’ was to put the labour party into authority. He was a socialist and based his views and actions on compassion, the sort of compassion that the Inspector wants to see in those he questions in the play. Brumley, where the play is set, is a large manufacturing town in the Midlands. In 1912 nearly 15 million people lived in large towns and cities. Most people worked in manufacturing industries, mining, transport and trade. England had huge social divisions, based largely on wealth and income. Priestley replicates this scenario when first describing t... ...outside of his safe world, inside of the house, to answer it. This signifies that he cannot escape reality and must face up to his actions. Finally, in order to show the that morals and meanings of the play are still relevant for a modern day audience, in Daldry’s production, the house lights are switched on for the Inspector’s speech and the core message of the play he has to deliver. Even though you may be watching how the Birlings have misbehaved, this is a reminder to the audience that no one should behave as they did and always face up to their responsibilities, which is the message Priestley wanted to convey in his play of â€Å"An Inspector Calls†. To conclude, I found that watching a production of â€Å"An Inspector Calls† immensely enhanced and furthered my understanding of the play, in many ways as explained and analysed thoroughly in this essay. Although Priestley’s ideas were noted when reading the play in class, I felt they were conveyed more emotionally had much more meaning when acted. Jordan Pye 8-12-11 Angle of Repose Written by Wallace Stegner, Angle of Repose won the Pulitzer Prize in 1972. Based on the letters written by Mary Hallcock Foote, the inspiration to Stengner’s character, Susan Ward, Stegner writes about a man, Lyman Ward, who has developed a bone crippling disease and has become dependent on others to assist him on his mission to discover his grandmother’s journey to Grass Valley. To accomplish this, Lyman went through a vast amount of letters and placed them in order of occurrence.His grandmother, Susan Burling Ward, had embarked on a journey of a lifetime with, her husband, Oliver Ward; on which they encountered many new hardships as they pioneered the West. Like many great quests, it leads him unfathomably into the murky shadows of his own life. Although people are not perfect and may face difficult circumstances in life, the noble character traits of Oliver and Susan enabled them to overcome their adversities. Born and raised in Ne w York, Susan was well educated, a fine writer, and a good painter. On the other hand, Oliver was stalwart, gifted, stoic, but most importantly, was worthy as a husband and provider.Leaving New York to pioneer the New Frontier, Susan was hoping that they would someday return as successes to reunite with her old friends. Beginning their journey in New Almaden, Oliver successfully acquired a job as a mine engineer. Also, Susan was getting a chance to be a writer for Scribner’s magazine. Lyman tells it was a time of true happiness. When an incident occurred between a fellow employee, Tregoning, and their boss, Mr. Kendall, Oliver was asked to perform a job that went against his principles and thus quit. Finally figuring he was drunk, she became incredibly upset with him and with the news that he had failed to obtain investors, Susan demanded Oliver to sleep outside. When Lyman and his assistant, Shelly, came to this part, Lyman related the departure of his wife, El len, to when Susan took the children to Vancouver Island. During the same time, Oliver led a survey party to Jackson Hole, Wyoming.As a result, Lyman felt similar pain to Susan after Oliver left. An additional crisis that they faced in Mesa was because Oliver was so busy with the canal, he left important paper work about property to one Mr. Burns and consequently, he lost the property. Although irate at first, the two of them surmounted the mistake and moved on. Both, Susan and Oliver, had different ways of handling their adversities, but in the end, they always forgave each other. While people are not quite sure why this is, it may have to do with the areas they live in. For starters, there is a lack of supermarkets in these low income areas and a surplus of convenience type stores. And even so, at the sup ermarkets the healthier foods such as the fruits, vegetables, and low fat dairy products have higher prices, of which most people in lower income areas cannot afford. The lower costing foods that they can afford are usually things such as fast food, junk foods and drinks such as soda. Also, in these lower income areas there is usually a higher rate of crime, so children are not out getting the exercise they need by playing. They are staying inside to stay safe. The mothers are also more likely to develop obesity. They will use whatever good and healthy foods that they have to feed their children and then eat the cheaper foods to fill her stomach. This usually leads to an overeating when good food does become available. In today’s times, most Americans consume about 1/3rd of their total calories outside of the home.
